SRI is a world leader in the development of technologies that facilitate real-time communication between people who do not share a common language. Our easy-to-use speech-to-speech translation systems offer an immediate increase in communication ability without extensive training or reliance on expensive (and potentially biased) human linguists.

SRI spoken translation technologies fall into three categories, each meeting different translation needs:

• Phraselator: unidirectional phrase-based translation from English into a foreign language
• Bilingual Phrase Translation: bidirectional phrase-based translation
• Full Spontaneous Translation: bidirectional translation of spontaneous utterances
  including the IraqComm^TM system currently in Iraq

Project funding

SRI's translation research is funded by DARPA through the Spoken Language Communication and Translation System for Tactical Use (TRANSTAC) and Compact Aids for Speech Translation (CAST) programs, supplemented by funding from the Language and Speech Exploitation Resources (LASER) ACTD.
