Hmm, never mind, it looks like it's a simple locale problem after all.

If I set LANG=C and run the tests, they all pass as identical except  
make-ngram-pfsg.  (On that one I'm still getting a gawk error,  
although a slightly different one: "gawk: /opt/srilm/bin/i686-m64/add-
pauses-to-pfsg:22: fatal: Invalid collation character: /
[[:lower:]?-?]/".  But it doesn't seem to affect the other tests.)

Setting LC_NUMERIC=C, as suggested in the INSTALL file, doesn't seem  
to be sufficient to work around the problem.  Setting LC_ALL=C does,  
however.  I should have tried that earlier, since it's right there in  
the documentation, but I didn't think to because it mentions problems  
with floating-point results, which weren't my issue.

Sorry to have put you through all that; I should have tried changing  
my locale first.
