SRI developed the Voice Interactive Personal Banking (VIPBanking)
system and interfaced it to the SRI Credit Union in 1991.
Credit Union customers can verbally request information about account
balances and checks, and make transfers between accounts. The VIPBanking
System obviates the unnatural touch-tone codes, transforming the
human-machine interaction into a simple, structured conversation.
The system regonizes words and phrases, including the full variety
of naturally-phrased dollar amount specifications. Voice-over-prompt
technology enables users to bypass system voice prompts by simply
speaking over them.
